Adidas was founded in 1949 in Herzogenaurach by Adolf "Adi" Dassler, a few months after his brother Rudolf split off to found Puma across the Aurach river. Both brands are still headquartered in Herzogenaurach, ~5 km from each other — one of the most famous brother-rivalries in sports business history.
